Full description
The second phase at Fort Picklecombe was proposed in 1846 with mountings for three 56-pounders and six 32-pounders on traversing platforms with a shot furnace. The work was to include two towers and be surrounded by a ditch, with an entrance over a drawbridge, and the guns firing through embrasures (b1). In 1851 the armament and barracks were completed and the magazine filled, but by 1853 the embrasures were in poor condition as a result of practice fire (b2,b3). The battery was demolished when the present casemated battery (6235.3) was built, but the barracks to the rear remain (b6).
