The archive for the St Albans Urban Archaeological Database is kept in St Albans, and can be consulted by prior appointment with the District Archaeologist.

c.9am to 4.30pm

Visitor Facilities:
Visitor desk available by appointment; library of local reports, periodicals, monographs and other sources, some national periodicals and publications; photographic collection; photocopying


Range of information available:
Records of archaeological sites, finds and industrial and other structures, such as World War II structures. Linked GIS data, including Historic Landscape Character data.  Local and some national publications, internal reports (e.g. historic town survey reports), fieldwork reports, mapping and aerial and other photographs.

The Hertfordshire HER is open to public consultation but an appointment must be made in advance in order to ensure staff are available to show visitors how to locate and use the HER information. Photocopies can be provided, subject to copyright.

Commercial consultations are charged a fee dependent on the time needed to fulfil the consultation. The online HER is not suitable for commercial and planning work. For such purposes please contact the Historic Environment Record staff.
