The Staffordshire Historic Environment Record (SHER) is one of the primary sources of information on the local historic environment, with over 13000 records on archaeological sites and monuments, finds, historic buildings and structures within the modern county of Staffordshire (although excluding the Stoke-on-Trent Unitary Authority area which has its own Historic Environment Record). The SHER includes a diverse range of information from details on prehistoric hillforts and manor houses to more discreet buried features identified from aerial photographs or excavations and more recent structures such as 2nd World War pillboxes. As well as the summary records included on the Heritage Gateway website the SHER also maintains more detailed information on many of the featured sites, monuments and buildings, as well a paper-based archive which includes over 1000 unpublished archaeological reports, historic mapping, aerial photography, local journals and other published literature. This additional information can be consulted in person at the SHER office in Stafford. To book an appointment please contact the Historic Environment Record Officer.
