Dorset HER
Visit Dorset HER
The Dorset Historic Environment Record (HER) is a record of historic buildings and all known archaeological finds and features in the county. Records range from from the earliest prehistoric periods to industrial sites and World War II defences, from isolated finds of coins or fragments of pottery to massive earthwork features covering many hectares. Wrecks and underwater sites are recorded.
The Dorset HER is maintained by Dorset Council, and contains information on the whole county, including the area covered by Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council.
The Historic Environment Record is situated at County Hall in Dorchester, where records are supplemented by a collection of unpublished fieldwork reports, photographs, and a selection of publications. The HER is expanding and being up-dated constantly. The HER is a public record and enquiries (by telephone, letter or email, or in person by appointment) are welcome.
