Full description

The Market House has been identified as of historical interest by the South Holland District Council Local List. It is a good example of this style of building of this period, although some alterations have occurred in the past, with the loss of some of its original features and historic character. {1}

Large two storey red and yellow brick former corn exchange, built with a wooden pediment and slate roof. Four windows to first floor have stone window surrounds, ground floor doors are surrounded in red brick with decrative yellow brick keystone at top of the door arch. {2}

The Market House was included in a programme of building recording, conducted in November 2003, prior to the demolition of a complex of outbuildings to its south and west. The Market House was built in 1856, to a design by architects Bellamy and Hardy, of Lincoln and incorporated York stone architectural elements into its cellar foundations. The building has been subjected to some structural alterations, with indications that the existing rear wall with carriage arch had originally formed part of another building, and was later rebuilt into the present structure. The arrangement of yards defined by brick walls to the rear of the building appear to have undergone various alterations, explaining the various alignments of the remaining walls.
Archaeological monitoring, conducted during the subsequent demolition and rebuilding of the adjacent 11-13 Market Street in April 2004, revealed only layers of late post-medieval made ground, indicating the site had remained undeveloped until the 19th century. {3}{4}
