Summary : This centurial stone was found during consolidation work of the north face of the Wall at Black Carts in 1972. It was found in the first course above the footings 65m west of the west turret 29a. The stone is of buff coloured sandstone and measures 0.36m x 0.20m. It is still in situ. The stone is inscribed with:COH IN S B'Of the First Cohort, the century of Nas(...) Bassus (built this)'.
More information : Findspot postioned on RCHME 1:2500 overlay at NY 8837 7131 according to the field investigators comments. (1) This centurial stone was found during consolidation work of the north face of the Wall at Black Carts in 1972. It was found in the first course above the footings 65m west of the west turret 29a. The stone is of buff coloured sandstone and measures 0.36m x 0.20m. It is still in situ. The stone is inscribed with: COH I N S B 'Of the First Cohort, the century of Nas(...) Bassus (built this) The stone is recorded as No. 3306 in the Roman Inscriptions of Britain. Other stones, numbers 1473 and 1501, identify the same centurion as the junior centurion of the First Cohort. The National Grid Reference for this building is: NY88367130 (2) According to English Heritage's Corporate GIS this stone lies in a World Heritage Site. The National Grid Reference for the site is: NY88367130 (3) This stone also features in the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies. (4)
