More information : (NY 2397 6229) Roman Altar (1) An inscribed Roman altar 6 x 10 ins, found before 1834 built in over the door of the Steamer Tavern, later called the Steam Packet Hotel, and now Hesket House, Port Carlisle, where it now is. Inscribed Matri bus svis milite(s). (2) As described. (3) Probably site of temple although no structure is known (see NY 26 SW 15) (4) Painted grey in the early 1970s (5a), the altar is still extant. There is no evidence for the existence of a temple. (5)
