More information : NY 35195642 Kirksteads Roman Remains found (NAT). (1) The name 'Kirksteads' implies that a church had been built on the site but there is no record of it, although a great number of sculptured stones and a Roman Altar have been found. The stones were seen and sketched by Collingwood and Hope in the gardens of Mrs Blaylock's house at Kirkandrews. Some digging, under Chancellor Ferguson, proved that the site was a burial ground. He thought it was Roman. (2) Roman Altar, probably mid 2nd c dedicated to Lucius Junius Victorinus Flavius Caelianus, found at Kirksteads in 1803. Full details of inscription given. (3) Altar now in the Tullie House Museum Carlisle. (4) No visible remains. (5)
