Summary : A Roman altar was found at Clifton in 1846 in making the Lancaster to Carlisle Railway. The altar is now in the possession of a Mr Brett of St Albans.
More information : A Roman Altar dedicated to Jupiter was found in 1846 at Clifton, in making the Lancaster-Carlisle Railway. Now (1960) in possession of
Mr J H Brett 137 Fishpool St. St Albans, Herts<(1)>, but was until May 1951 in the grounds of Dykesfield, Cumberland (NY 30795921, at which position it was published on the OS 25"), when it was moved to Ide in Kent. Full details of inscription. (1-2)
