Summary : A Roman centurial stone that was found in the wall of a 17th century house at Hexham. The centurial stone was found in 1885. It measures 11x8 inches and is inscribed with the following:coh(ortis) VIIII c(enturia) Ma/rci Coma(ti)'From the ninth cohort the century of Marcius Comatus (built this)'.The stone is now built into the interior face of the west wall of Hexham Abbey nave.
More information : A centurial stone, in the wall of a 17th c. house at Hexham, is 1 ft. by 8 1/2 ins., and bears the inscription CH.VIIII>MA RGI.COMA. This is taken to read 'Cohortic nonae, centuria Marci (i) Comati or Communis (i.e. 'The century of Marcius Comatus (or Communis) of the ninth cohort'). (1) The stone could not be located among the surviving 17th c. houses in Hexham. (2) The centurial stone was found in 1885. It is now built into the interior face of the west wall of Hexham Abbey nave. The stone is recorded as No.1169 in the Roman Inscriptions of Britain. (3) The National Grid Reference for this monument is: NY9364 (4)
