More information : Roman altar found at Featherwood along Dere Street in 1914.
The stone is 51" high, 22" wide and 13" deep. The inscription reads:

VICTORIAE/ET PACI IUL(IUS)/MEPANIUS/......./PUBLICO/
V(OTUM)/S(OLVIT)/L(IBENS) M(ERITO).

"To Victory and Peace Julius Mep(/)anius.......paid a vow gladly
and deservedly". The fourth line is purposely erased.

The altar is now in the parish church of the Holy Trinity, Horsley
on Rede. (1)

Found lying in the grass in 1914 by workmen remetalling the Roman
road close to the steading at Featherwood. The altar can be classed
with the other Bremenium altars. It was perhaps brought thence when
Featherwood was built. (2)

The altar is preserved in the porch of the church at
Horsley. Its face is very worn, and the inscription has become, for
the most part illegible. No additonal information was acquired from
local enquiries, and the vicar who resides at Otterburn was not
available for consultation. (3)
