More information : (Area TQ 352856). A white marble sarcophagus containing the skeleton of an adult, found in 1867 during building work on the brow of the hill behind the London Orphan Asylum at Clapton, is now in the Guildhall Museum. (The orphanage is shown at TQ 351856 on the OS 6" map of 1873). No lid was found with the coffin, although there is evidence of clamps at each end. It is ornamented on one side with fluting, and a central bust above an inscription is now only partly decipherable. It was buried 2 1/2ft deep, resting on natural gravel, and near it was found a coin of Gallienus.
