Summary : Parish Church. 1885 on medieval site with 1905-7 tower. Quarry-faced pink St Bees sandstone with calciferous sandstone quoins and red sandstone dressings. Graduated Welsh slate roof with coped gables and cross finial. 6-bay nave with square 3-storey west tower and 4-bay chancel with north vestry. St Mary's Church has tower foundations of the 12th century, and was rebuilt in 1885. An inscribed fragment of Roman altar was found in the church wall during rebuilding and is now in Newcastle Museum. The altar measures 16" by 11" by 10 ". Two fragments of a 10th-11th century cross-head were found nearby at at Eller Bank during road widening and are now in the church.

St. Mary's Church, Harrington, has tower foundations of 12th cent., but was rebuilt in 1885 (2)
