Terraced houses. c1818. By Amon Wilds and Amon Henry Wilds.
Stuccoed to ground floor, painted brick above apart from Nos
7-8, 11 and 15 which are stuccoed all over, and No.18 which
has unpainted brick on the upper floors. Roofs of slate.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over basement with dormers, except for Nos
14-20 which are of 3 storeys; one-window range in the form of
a broad triple or tripartite window to bay, except for No.12
which is of 3-window range. Ground floor decorated with banded
rustication. Steps up to porch of Doric columns and
entablature, except for Nos 5, 15, 17 and 19-20 which are
Ionic, No.15 mutilated. Recessed round-arched entrance with
fanlight. All windows flat-arched. Full-height segmental bay
to right of entrance, wider above the ground floor. Bays have
triple windows except for Nos 6 first, second and third
floors, 14 and 15 ground floor and 16-18, which are tripartite
and No.12 which has 2 windows to ground floor and 3 above.
Balcony to first floor with cast-iron railings except on No.5
where it is missing and Nos 6, 10, 12 and 16-18 which have
canopies also; storey band between second and third floors;
cornices interrupted on Nos 5 and 6, missing on Nos 13 and 19;
Nos 11-13 have attic storey with secondary cornice; blocking
course; dormers in mansard roof; stacks to party walls.
Cast-iron railings to steps and area with conical finials.
Features of interest on individual houses are: No.5, panelled
reveals to entrance and decorative glazing to overlight,
mullions to first-, second-, and third-floor windows decorated
with reeding; No.6 has panelled door of original design and
decorative glazing to fanlight; Nos 7-9 have Greek key
ornament and paterae to porch entablature and decorative
glazing to fanlight; No.1 has triglyphs and paterae to porch
entablature, blind boxes to second floor; Nos 12-13 have
triglyphs and paterae to porch entablature and decorative
glazing to fanlight; No.12 has panelled door and sashes of
original design and cast-iron window-guards to ground floor;
No.13 has triglyphs, paterae and mutule cornice to porch
entablature, and sashes of original design; No.15 has
re-entrant angle to porch and sashes of original design; No.16
has re-entrant angle to porch, Greek key and paterae to porch
entablature and sashes of original design; No.17 has
pulvinated frieze to porch entablature, cast-iron
window-guards to ground floor and sashes of original design to
first and second floors; No.18 has modillion cornice to porch
entablature and sashes of original design; No.20 has former
round-arched entrance, now blocked, on right-hand return,
decorated with banded rustication and framed by pilasters and
entablature.
