Summary : Middle Saxon settlement identifed on Hayling Island. The site occupies the Iron Age - Romano-British temple complex (SU 70 SW 7). It appears that substantial parts of the temple were standing, and reused during the 8th-9th century. Cess-pits, ditches and post-holes were located in the northwest sector of the Roman temple temeros courtyard. |
More information : SU 725023. A Middle Saxon settlement was discovered overlaying the IA/RO temple complex (SU 70 SW 7) on Hayling Island. It appears that substantial parts of the temple were standing, and reused during the 8th-9th century. Anglo-Saxon cess-pits, ditches and post-holes were located in the northwest sector of the Roman temple temeros courtyard. (1-2) |
