More information : [NZ 115221] Raby Park [NAT] (1) There were three parks at Raby in Leland's time (1506-1552), two with deer, the middle one with a lodge (2). Whitaker describes Raby Park as an area of deer-park, woods and plantations of 1000 acres enclosed by fence, wall and iron fencing. (2)(3)
Medieval deer park and woodland at Raby Castle, developed during the 18th century as a landscape park and enclosed formal gardens. Eighteenth century features include two lakes constructed circa 1746, periment tree planting, clumps and ornamental buildings including a garden seat, screen, dog kennel, gothic temple, bath house, cottage and folly. Recent planting includes Juliee Clump, planted in 1977. ornamental grounds are present north and east of the castle, these comprise a walled garden containing rose gardens, herbaceous borders and yew hedges. Also present is a gardeners cottage, conservatory and pergola. A terrace extends along the outer edge of the wall with a ha ha beyond. The terraces is planted with fruit trees. (4)
The park was laid out circa 1740-46 with advice from Thomas Wright and Joseph Spence. Further plans to improve the park were prepared in 1771 by Thomas White, but were only partly executed. The garden is mainly late 20th century in date. (5)
