Summary : The site of a former underground railway station, opened by the City and South London Railway on 17th November 1901. Located between Old Street and Angel, the station was never well patronised and in 1908 proposals were first put forward for its closure. It remained open however, but when the Underground Group closed the section of the line north of Moorgate Street for tunnel widening on 9th August 1922, City Road remained closed after the line reopened. The platforms were later removed, although the white tiling still remains, and in 1941 the tunnels were converted for use as an air raid shelter. The majority of the street level building was demolished, but the section which housed the lift shaft still remains in use for ventilation purposes. |
