Monument Number 11364

Hob Uid: 11364
Location :
Cumbria

Hesket
Grid Ref : NY4829141204
Summary : An Iron Age or Roman period trackway is visible as cropmarks on air photos.
More information : Cropmarks west of Roman road, 1 1/2 miles north of Old Penrith, Plumpton Wall, Cumberland. (1)

Centred NY 48344097. Sinuous pair of cropmarks, parallel lines crossing field, straightening up as they go across. Possibly just a tractor mark but they may be too wide. It could be a traceway but more evidence is required. (2)

A Prehistoric or Roman double ditched trackway is visible as cropmarks on air photographs extending for 310 metres (NY 4847 4104 to NY 4865 4129). It lies to the east of the trackway recorded by authority 2 and is probably a continuaton of it. A single boundary ditch appears to be associated with it. The slightly sinuous trackway lies to the west of a Roman road (RR 7e, Linear 307), but the relationship is uncertain.
(3)

An Iron Age or Roman period trackway is visible as cropmarks on air photos around NY4838 4097. The two sections described by authorities 2 and 3 together curve gently from the south-west to the north-east between NY4818 4094 and NY4864 4129. At its north-western end this trackway probably joined with another route leading from the north-west (see UID1573629) at a point close to the Brougham to Carlisle Roman road (UID 1031541). The southern end of this trackway lies beyond the edge of the Cumbrian Terrestrial Minerals Resource NMP Project (UID1573157) and may continue further south-west. (4-7)

The Eden Petteril Caldew Transect Project has now recorded the south-west extent of this trackway. It can now be traced over a distance of 870m, between NY4793 4093 and NY4864 4129. (8)
