Summary : Mount St Mary's Cistercian Abbey. Founded 1147 from Fountains Abbey but, suffering from robbers, it was transferred to Kirkstall in 1152, the site being retained as a grange. The site of the grange is in a field called `Monk's Royd', tiles and leadwork having being found there. |
More information : [SD 8729 4668] Site of ABBEY [G.T.] (Cistercian founded AD 1147) (1) The Cistercian Abbey of Mount St, Mary was founded at Barnoldswick on 19th May 1147 and was colonized by an abbot, twelve monks and ten lay brothers from Fountains Abbey. Five years later the abbey was transferred to Kirkstall (1.)
When the monks moved to Kirkstall, Barnoldswick was reduced to the status of a grange. (2). (2-3) The position of the abbey 'in a field still called Monks Royd (or Rood) is known from tradition, confirmed by the discovery of remains of tiles and lead pipes dug up there a century or so ago'.
