More information : 'U' enclosure cropmark visible at NY 445493. (1)
An Iron Age or Roman rectilinear enclosure is visible as cropmarks and shallow earthworks on air photos and on lidar imagery at NY4448 4924. The enclosure appears to be cut by a slightly sinuous ditch of unknown but later date. The enclosure is visible both as a fine cropmarked ditch (less than 3m wide) and a broad shallow earthwork ditch (up to 20m wide), the internal platform measures approximately 85x66m. There is a suggestion of an east facing entrance. The enclosure is in an elevated position above the River Petteril, the northern and western sides and corner of the enclosure run along the edge of the steep gorge cut by the river. It lies opposite the Park House Roman Fort (see UID11338), though separated by the river, and within 500m of the Brougham to Carlisle Roman Road (UID1031541) and the Scalesceugh Roman tilery (UID11340).
