Location :
East Riding of Yorkshire
Bridlington
Grid Ref : TA1769067960
Summary : The Priory of Augustinian Canons, at Bridlington, was founded before 1113-4, and dissolved in 1537. This was one of the largest houses of the order, and there appear to have been a number of lay brothers until the fourteenth century. In 1380 the house contained the prior, twenty-four canons, and only one lay-brother. The last prior, William Wode, was executed in 1537 after the Pilgrimage of Grace, and it is said that there were then twenty-six canons who were expelled through the attainder.

The Priory of Augustinian Canons, at Bridlington, was founded before 1113-4, (a,b) and dissolved in 1537. `This was one of the largest houses of the order, and there appear to have been a number of lay brothers until the fourteenth century. In 1380 the house contained the prior, twenty-four canons, and only one lay-brother (c). The last prior, William Wode, was executed in 1537 after the Pilgrimage of Grace, and it is said that there were then twenty-six canons who were expelled through the attainder'. (2)

`Bridlington Priory ... was founded by Walter de Gart ... in the time of Henry I, 1113 being the date accepted at Bridlington ... A dissolution-survey (d) gives a very full account of the destroyed presbytery and the monastic buildings ....' (3)

`The domestic buildings and the church, save the nave, were destroyed in 1539. (4)

History of the Priory: List of Priors from before 1124 to 1537. (5)

`No authority has yet been shown for the statement sometimes seen that a Saxon nunnery preceded the Priory, ...' (7)

For field report see component cards. (8)

William of Aumale expelled the canons from Bridlington Priory church in 1143-4, presumably in order to fortify it. (9)
