Summary : Finchley Central Station opened as Finchley and Hendon on 22nd August 1867 on the GNR's single line of 8.75 miles from Seven Sisters to Edgware. It became Finchley (Church End) on 1st February 1894 and Finchley Central on 1st April 1950. As part of the 1935-40 New Works Programme, it became an underground station on the Northern Line on 14th April 1940. In the late 1990s, London Underground unveiled a plaque at Finchley Central in honour of Harry Beck, a draughtsman from North Finchley, who designed the now famous Tube map. |
