SHOREHAM-BY-SEA ST NICOLAS LANE (north side) OLD SHOREHAM Church of St Nicholas

I

Church. Circa 900, c.1140, C14. Restored 1839-40 by J M Neale with J C Buckler the chancel. Nave, crossing tower, transeptal chapels and chancel. Flint with stone dressings, Horsham slab roofs. West part of north wall of nave c.900 with tall blocked doorway on north side, perhaps as part of tower nave. Nave otherwise c.1140 as are the central towers and transeptal chapels. Blocked doorway in south side of nave, c.1140. Three bays, with windows renewed; only one window to north. Transept ends with jagged windows replacing lancets copied from Climping. Tower has bell stage made up of three arches, the central open with twin sub-arches, all in a rectangular panel. Oeils-de-boeuf above, topped by pyramidally-hipped roof. Chancel: 2 bays with east window of c.1330, with reticulated tracery. Similar window in vestry. Interior: Tower arches. Responds with three demi-arches, the middle one thicker. Scalloped capitals and arches of a plain soffit and 2 rolls, left and right, and broad labels with zig-zag and billet decoration. Faces on south transept-arch. Tie-beam at east end of nave, possibly circa 1140, with billet ornament. Tie-beam in chancel, c.1300, ornamented with dog tooth. Screen, also c.1300, with trefoiled heads to narrow lights.
