The site of a Roman villa was discovered at Bishopstone in 1812, during digging for the foundations of the rectory. A 30 ft square tessellated pavement of outstanding design was found 16 inches below the ground, and Roman bricks and coarse and fine pottery were discovered at a distance of up to 200 yards on every side of the house, also three coins of Constantine. Sandstone foundations from 3 feet to 5 feet wide were uncovered in 1821 in the kitchen garden SW ofthe house, traced for a length of 55 feet, including an angle, and were parallel with the sides of the pavement. On the east side of the house were foundations of a 20 inch wall, strongly cemented, and quantities of black earth and bones with fragments of cinerary urns were also found. Part of the pavement was presented to Hereford Museum in 1895. (2-4)
