| Summary : Thonglands moated site lies 800 metres south east of the village of Broadstone. The site is oval in shape and measures 62 metres north-south by 95 metres east-west. The moat ditch survives on all but the north east side where it has been infilled and partly overlain by farm buildings. The moat ditch is waterfilled on the west and south sides and survives as a dry ditch on the east side. On the south side it is crossed by a narrow earth-covered causeway representing the remains of a stone bridge. The moat island is raised about 0.5 metres above the surrounding ground level. It is occupied by a farmhouse, Listed Grade II, part of which dates from the 17th century. A medieval manor house is thought to have occupied the same location. The island also contains the ruined remains of a medieval circular dovecote, 6 metres in diameter and 10 metres high. The moat is considered to have been a manorial site, possibly associated with a chapel. The exact location of the chapel, although marked as being adjacent to the moat, is unknown. Scheduled. |

A partially filled in circular moat surrounds Thonglands manor
house. A section cut across the south-west corner by Rowley
indicated that the moat had been recently cleaned and only modern
pottery was discovered. It is not certain whether the moat served
a functional purpose or whether it is a result of 16th century
landscaping. Several earthworks and ridge and furrow, possibly the
remains of a field-system, can be seen in the field to the north of
the house. Later Rowley stripped a 20 ft. square area covering the
corner of one of the earthworks revealing a small area of loose
bedded stones, but no structures. Documentary evidence indicates
there was a grange and hamlet here during the middle ages. When the
farm buildings were reconstructed in the middle of the 19th
century several skeletons were found, probably associated with an
early chapel which stood on the site. (2-3)
The roughly circular moat is waterfilled but has been obliterated
in its north-east quadrant. Nothing remains of the chapel.
