Summary : A fortified tower house, built circa 1460, to replace an earlier 12th century tower house. In 1577 an Elizabethan wing was added to the south of the tower and in 1657 a Renaissance wing was added to the south end of the Elizabethan wing. The tower has thick pink sandstone block walls on projecting boulder plinth, with projecting battlemented parapets and stone water spouts. There is a flat roof which is not visible. The hall ranges have have similar, but thinner walls, under a graduated greenslate roof with large red sandstone chimney stacks. The tower is rectangular and of two storeys over a vaulted basement. |

Catterlen Hall has a pele tower built 1460, with newel stair and crenellated parapet. The main hall has an Elizabethan wing with date stone 1577 and a second wing built 1657. (2)
The pele tower, now semi-derelict, is at NY 47803207, and incorporated into the main block. The latter at NY 47803206 is predominately Elizabethan, now an occupied farmhouse. The south wing is completely original, 1657 period (date on fireplaces) and used only for farm storage. See GPs AO/66/193/4 and 5. (3)

NY 47803207 Catterlen Hall tower house. Built in c1460 to replace an earlier 12th century tower house (NY 43 SE 16). In 1577 an Elizabethan wing was added to the south of the tower and in 1657 a Renaissance wing was added to the south end of the Elizabethan wing. During the 1970s and 1980s the tower was renovated; scheduled. (7)
