Summary : The house of correction was situated in Skirbeck Quarter, south of Boston on the west side of the river Witham. It was erected in 1809 and largely completed by 1810. A plan and elevation dated 1808 are of a two-storey, four-bay building with the keeper's house in the centre and a male prison to the left and a female prison to the right, and two yards to the rear. In October 1822, the Quarter Sessions determined that a treadmill should be erected at Skirbeck. From 1826 Skirbeck was only used to hold prisoners for trial. After 1837 Boston Borough Gaol became available for county prisoners and Skirbeck House of Correction closed. In 1849 it was converted into a lock-up. |
