Monument Number 1529859

Hob Uid: 1529859
Location :
North Yorkshire
Ryedale
Rievaulx
Grid Ref : SE5765484345
Summary : Medieval water supply and drainage associated with Rievaulx Abbey is visible as earthworks on air photographs. The features consist of extensive water channels, some of which are banked on the west. These channels extend from the abbey in the north, where two large ponds are located, southwards, where the channel feeds back in to the River Rye. A possible earlier off-shoot of the water channels extends south west from the centre of the water supply system, entering the River at this point. A narrow water channel extending from the northernmost pond to a smaller pond, central to the water supply system, may be later in date, acting as drainage. A further leat extending from the same north pond follows the natural base of the slope of Terence Bank Wood and may be post medieval in date, possibly associated with industrial activity. These water management features appear to be associated with further water supply to the north of Rievaulx.
