The southern slope of the castle mound was laid out as ornamental gardens during the mid 19th century, and contains a formal rose garden which was completed in 1937. The grounds were developed as a public park during the 1920s. |

The rose garden replaced a mid 19th century bowling green and garden terrace. A walled kitchen garden, also mid 19th century in date, has been replaced by a bowling green.
