Summary : Parish church. Founded circa 1095-1100 by Bishop Herbert who attached to it a Benedictine Priory of monks (TF61NW7). It was rebuilt in the 13th century and has been altered almost continuously since. Plan of twin west towers, aisled nave, transepts, crossing tower and aisled chancel. The interior was remodelled and the crossing tower built 1745-6 by Matthew Brettingham, after the crossing lantern and south-west spire collapsed in 1741. Restored in 1875 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The church is built of limestone with lead roofs.
