There is a reference to a gate built on the bridge in 1343 and a plan of circa 1650 shows a rectangular tower occupying almost the entire western half of the bridge. More information : (TG 23970899) Site of BISHOP GATE (NR) (TG 23990899) BISHOP BRIDGE (NR) The bridge, which is the oldest in Norwich, was built circa 1340. It was originally maintained by the bishops but the city was given control of it in 1393. There is a reference made to the building of a gate on Bishop Bridge in 1343, and a plan by Richard Wright which probably dates circa 1650, shows the gate to be a rectangular tower with what appear to be angle turrets at each corner. It is shown as occupying almost the entire western half of Bishop Bridge. Grade 2* No trace of the gate can be seen. See ground photograph.
