Summary : Site of Second World War heavy anti aircraft battery ZE4 at Buckhurst Hill, Chigwell. It was armed with four 3-inch guns in 1940, upgraded to four 5.25-inch guns by late 1944. It was manned by 275 and 273 Batteries of the 86th Royal Artillery Regiment in 1940, by 384 Battery of the 120th Royal Artillery Regiment in 1942, and by 435 Battery of the 132nd Mobile Royal Artillery Regiment in 1943. It was retained as a Nucleus Force Headquarters Battery after the war. |
