Site of Second World War heavy anti aircraft battery ZS19 on Wimbledon Common. Gazetteer by Dobinson records the following : two 5.25-inch guns with GL Mark II radar in 1942, 4 twin 5.25-inch guns in June 1944, 2 twin 5.25-inch guns in November 1944. It was manned by 350 Battery of the 163rd (Mixed) Royal Artillery Regiment in 1942. It was retained as an Off-Site Nucleus Force Battery in 1946. (2)
A promise of six 5.25in twin guns from Admiralty was gained in March 1941 in exchange for 300 Bofors. Only half the number arrived (3) these were tested at ZE14 Primrose Hill, ZS19 Wimbledon, ZS27 Coldharbour Farm and proofed and ready to fire by early 1942. (3)
Only ever one 5.25†twin was installed. (4)
