| Summary : A Second World War heavy anti-aircraft battery is visible as a structure on aerial photographs. The battery is located within the Pilning firing range (ST58NE 35) and covers an area that measures 100m northeast/southwest and 55m northwest/southeast. The battery comprises a command post, three octagonal gunpits and one square gunpit. The gunpits and magazine have all been partially demolished on the most recent available photography but the command post is still in situ. It mounted four 3.7-inch static guns and GL Mark II radar. In 1941 it was manned by 363 Battery of the 116th Royal Artillery Regiment, and in June 1942 by 472 Battery of the 133rd Royal Artillery Regiment. |
More information : A Second World War anti-aircraft battery is visible as a structure on aerial photographs. The battery is located within the Pilning firing range (ST58NE 35, UID 1456752) and centred at ST 5502 8619, covering an area that measures 100m northeast/southwest and 55m northwest/southeast. The battery comprises a command post (ST 5502 8620), south of which are three octagonal gunpits (ST 5506 8620, ST 5505 8618 and ST 5502 8617) and a fourth (ST 5499 8617) which appears to have a square wall enclosing the gunpit. It is not clear why this gunpit is square rather than the standard octagonal shape. The gunpits have all been demolished on the most recent available photography taken in 1989 however the circular concrete bases remain, though much overgrown. The command post is still in situ and appears to be in use as shown on the modern Ordnance Survey map (2005). (1-3)
