Summary : A micro-granite quarry which began production in the 1870s, initially to supply railway ballast for the Crewe-Carlisle railway line and produced a fwe hundred tons per year. Later improvements in the 1890s increased production to 80000 tons per annum to provide material for the construction of the Thirlmere Reservoir and for roadstone. The quarry ceased production in the 1980s and much of the quarry that remains date to its later phases. There is a crushing mill dating from the 1870s, and a later engine shed.
