Summary : Mow Cop Castle was constructed as a folly in 1754 of sandstone rubble. It straddles the border of the counties of Cheshire and Staffordshire. The largest portion of the building is a round tower with porthole and arched windows, to which is attached a large pointed arch. The hilltop and folly were used as an open air meeting area for the Primitive Methodist movement in the mid to late 19th centuries, attracting over 70,000 people on the centenary of the first assembly. |
More information : Mow Cop Castle is a sham ruined castle, or folly, built as a summerhouse by Randle Wilbraham and in 1754. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble on a tall gritstone hill and lies within both Cheshire and Staffordshire, straddling the border. The largest portion of the building is a round tower with porthole and arched windows, to which is attached a large pointed arch. (1-2)
