Summary : A Roman cemetery dating from the 1st to the 3rd or 4th century was found in 1842, 1843 and 1928-9. A number of cremations were found. Finds included glass vessels, gold ear rings, a silver spoon and a jet necklace.
More information : (TL 995261) A Roman cemetery first discovered by Wire in 1842, urns were also found when the railway cutting was made east of the station in 1843, but the main concentration was near the brickyard. Included are two cremations in globular amphorae one of which also contained six vessels of glass. Gold ear rings a silver spoon and a jet necklace in the museum apparently came from this cemetery and in 1928-9 the museum recovered some 32 burial groups. Vessels include two fire glass urns. Date of cemetery end of 1st century to late 3rd or 4th century. (1-3)
