Location : Somerset Somerset West and Taunton Porlock

Grid Ref : SS8638548154 |
Summary : Late 19th century hulk assemblage recorded at Porlock Weir, said to have comprised some twenty vessels, at least one of which was said to have been a vessel built in 1797, recovered to re-enter service in 1894, and still trading in 1907. The precise location of the assemblage at Porlock is not known but is likely to have been to the north, on the shingle spit which encloses the dock from the sea, since to the eastward it would have obstructed access to the dock, and likewise within the dock. This is a conjectural observation for spatial depiction purposes only. |
More information : A hulk graveyard comprising some 20 hulks was recorded at Porlock Weir in the late 19th century. One at least, originally built in 1797, was recovered in 1894, and was still trading in 1907. (1)
The dock at Porlock was built circa 1855 (2) and is enclosed by a shingle spit to the north. (3)(4) It seems likely, therefore, that a hulk assemblage specified as at Porlock Weir was located on the shingle spit, since it would have formed an obstruction within the dock and at the eastern end would have obstructed access to the dock itself. This, however, is a conjectural location for the purposes of spatial depiction only. (5)
