More information : The sites of four barrows adjacent to the ramparts of the Roman fort at Tregear (SX 06 NW 2) are shown by Iago, see illustration. (1)
One is shown by Maclauchlan at SX 03396692 in his plan of the fort. He records it being "within living memory" about 5ft high but removed for manure. It incorporated river stones and at the centre was a compartment containing ashes. In 1883 it was only visible as a very low mound. Three other barrow sites are shown at `A` SX 03376704, `B` SX 03456705 and `C` SX 03426691. These were identified by shallow pits or depressions where the material had been dug away for field dressing. (Bronze knife and spearhead found in vicinity possibly associated with these barrows, see SX 06 NW 21). (2) There is no trace of the barrow at SX 03396692. Under crop. (3)
