Summary : A long section of road or trackway is visible as earthworks on historic air photos. This feature was clearly in use in the post medieval period but it also coincides with the course of the Egremont to Carlisle Roman road and it may be a re-use of this earlier route. Some parts appear to survive as earthworks but some have been levelled by the straightening of the A595 at this point. |
More information : A long section of road or trackway is visible as earthworks on historic air photos at NY1622 3726. This feature was clearly in use in the post medieval period but it also coincides with the course of the Egremont to Carlisle Roman road and it may be a re-use of this earlier route. This feature is visible as a hollowed way between NY1603 3705, where the A595 diverges from the course of the Roman road and NY1638 3752. The more southerly section is fairly straight but it meanders where is descends and ascends the banks of Threapland Gill. This trackway was interrupted by the diggings of a small quarry in the early 20th century (see UID1574416). This feature is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1866 and at that time ran through Threapland Wood. Some parts appear to survive as earthworks but others were levelled when the A595 was straightened some time between 1948 and 1968. (1-3) |
