Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 193485

Hob Uid: 193485
Location :
Somerset
South Somerset
Dinnington
Grid Ref : ST4040013500
Summary : Surface finds of roof slates, tesserae and pottery indicated the site of a Roman building, possibly a villa. Evaluation in 2002 comprising geophysical survey and trial trenching revealed a large 4th century mosaic belonging to a more extensive courtyard villa. Cropmarks to the south seen on 2010 aerial photographs may be the remians of associated fields.
More information : Dinnington, Hinton St George, ST 405135. A Romano-British site here has been watched for a number of years because of surface finds of tesserae, roofing slates and pottery. Cropmarks were noted in 1976 and three small holes dug in the site. A number of coins have been found and also a small bronze dog. (The site is within a quarter of a mile of the Seavington St Mary Villa - ST 41 SW 1, and is probably related to it). (1)

SO 17 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa. (2)

Evaluation by the 'Time Team' comprising geophysical survey and trial trenching revealed a large 4th century mosaic belonging to a more extensive courtyard villa. Earlier phases of building were also recorded. (3)

The cropmarks of possible field boundary ditches seen on HE Reconnaissance aerial photographs may be associated with this villa. They can be seen at ST 4022 1327 and extending eastwards into the adjoining field. Other cropmarks between these and the site of the villa are the remains of a pipeline dug around 2006.(4-5)
