Summary : Site of a Roman villa discovered in 1710 or 1711 in the vicinity of Hazelbury House. The villa was described as being 184 feet long and featuring a tessellated pavement. In 1972, it was reported that stone and tile fragments could be seen concentrated in a small area, with the site of the villa possibly represented by a rectangular terrace cut into the west-facing slope and possibly connected with slight earthwork banks. Air photographs suggest the presence of a square enclosure and a curvilinear enclosure, partially overlapping. A possible rectangular enclosure is also visible.
More information : "..at Hasilbury Farm, 6 miles from Bath, between Box and Corsham, was found in 1710 or 1711, a villa 184 feet long having a Tessellated Pavement." (1) ST 836681 (?). Supposed villa site at Hazelbury. Shaw Mellor has found Roman sherds SE of Hazelbury House. (2) The area is under pasture and there are no indications of a Roman villa. Shaw-Mellor is now dead. No further information available at Devizes, where Shaw-Mellor's collection is lodged. (3) ST 83606820. Stone and tile fragments are concentrated in a small area, but the precise site of the villa is suggested by a rectangular "terrace" cut into the west facing slope and possibly connected with slight banks. (4) A rapid examination of air photography (5a) suggests the presence of a partially overlapping square enclosure (sides c.70m at ST 836680) and curvilinear enclosure (ST 835 680). Also visible is a possible rectangular enclosure (ST 837682) showing as a light cropmark, possibly indicating a stone building. The features, all visible as cropmarks, may be related to the villa site. (5)
