Summary : The Cathedral Church of St James, built within the precinct of Bury St Edmunds Abbey, mostly dates from the early 16th century. The earliest church on the site, however, was St Denis's church and was built around 1065. This church was rebuilt in the early 12th century by Abbot Anslem who dedicated it to St James. Once built, it served as a parish church.The present church on the site dates mostly from the phase of construction beginning in 1503 and there are 18th and 19th century alterations. The church became a cathedral in 1914 when the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich was created. Building work began again in 1960 to rebuild the chancel and construct transepts and side chapels. Between 2000 and 2005 a gothic tower was built. |
