Summary : Excavation uncovered a Roman villa consisting of a possible aisled farmhouse with two ranges of outbuildings around a yard. Possible Roman milestone was found which is now in Winchester Museum. Scheduled.
More information : (SU 3145 4897) ROMAN VILLA (Site of) (T.I.) (1)

Partial excavation, in 1897 by G.H.Engleheart, revealed a ? basilican dwelling house with two ranges of out-buildings facing three sides of a roughly rectangular yard 150' x 200' (see plan). The site is noteworthy for the finding of an inscribed stone M.AVR.KARINO.N.CAES which Rivet considers either a milestone or an inscription indicating a royal estate. Coins found included two of Domitian (81-90 A.D.) and one of Marcus (161 - 180 A.D.) but the majority were of the late empire, indicating an occupation date of late 3rd.c - early 4th.c. (2)

The dwelling house may be a hall subsiduary to a small unexcavated domestic range. (3)

There are no structural remains of this building but a widespread scatter of Ro. debris confirms the published siting. The inscribed stone and a column base are in Winchester Museum. (4)
