Summary : A vault in the wall of Southampton Castle (SU 41 SW 96) located approximately 100 metres northwest of the site of the now demolished keep. The vault is a long rectangular building with a barrel vault built in rubble. Originally intended to have a series of transverse ribs, these were never installed although the corbels to carry them were put in position before the vault was built. The vault appears to have been built circa 1170 alongside what was in the 12th century the quayside beside the castle. Its function was presumably to provide storage for goods being brought into the castle. |
