"Col. Wade has found a rubbish pit, a well, flue tiles and painted plaster on the slopes of the Downs at Glade, 1 mile N of Bentley". (2)
"Maj. A.G. Wade has observed.... at Glade Farm on the Bentley parish boundary on the eastern edge of Penley Copse, a Roman villa, one room of which he opened, finding painted wall plaster, much pottery etc, and pig and fowl bones...". (3)
The site, on the south crest of the hill, is now pasture and only two pieces of Roman tile were found. Major Wade could add nothing to the information above and made no plan of the structure. (4)

No further excavations have been carried out on this site, which is under pasture. (6)
An air photograph of the Glade Farm Villa site taken in 1983 suggests two rectangular buildings linked around a courtyard. (7) |
