More information : A spread of dark, sub-circular soilmarks are visible on air photos taken in 1948 and 2002. These features may be the remains of charcoal burning hearths of medieval or post medieval date. They are visible across a number of modern fields between Park Beck and Low Lane, around SE3392 5050. This area may have been part of the medieval hunting park, or the outwood beyond it, which could have provided the raw materials for charcoal production (see UID 53076). If these were charcoal burning hearths they may have been related to the operation of a smelting mill located a little to the north on Crimple Beck (see UID53482). Another group of similar soilmarks are visible a little to the north (see UID 1569735). (1-2) |
