Hob Uid: 1012548
Location :
Northumberland
Bardon Mill
Grid Ref : NY7910068500
Summary : The possible site of Roman temple(s). Several fragments from Roman altars found on Chapel Hill suggest that the hill was the site of a number of temples, although only two have been proven. A number of fragmentary banks defining enclosures or structures are visible on and around Chapel Hill; these may represent the remains of the temples. The hill has been terraced in areas; some of terracing accommodates post roman cultivation.
More information : Various finds of altars suggest that there were five or six temples on or near Chapel Hill. (1)

Of the temples noted by Birley and Keeney(1), the Mithraeum (NY 7905 6846 and the temple at NY 7909 6858 are recorded separately (see NY 76 NE 196 and 197). Nothing can be seen of the remainder. (2)
