Summary : Slype and Sacristy, 12th century in date located north of St Augustine's Abbey church. The slype or passage way led to the monks cemetery. The construction of this was probably begun by Abbot Wido and finished by Abbot Hugh de Fleury. In later times the slype was made into a small room, possibly a vestry or parlour. |
More information : (TR 15505777, see illustration card for plan) A vestry or parlour N of the N transept of St Augustine's Abbey Church was partly uncovered during excavations in 1902-3 by S Evans. It corresponds to the slype or passage leading to the monks' cemetery, but in later times this was made into an oblong room. This room had an upper storey-possibly a library. (1) Sacristy, now uncovered, a narrow apartment. (2) Slype built c1087-1124. Sacristy first mentioned c1126-51. (3)
