Summary : Cropmarks of a late Iron Age/early Roman settlement consisting of overlapping enclosures, hut circles and a possible pit alignment; the pottery dates from the early/mid-1st century AD to the mid-2nd century AD. Adjacent to this native settlement is the site of a 3rd-4th century AD Roman villa, it is a rectangular building with a wing at one end and is located amongst enclosures.
More information : Romano British settlement site revealed by aerial photography. (1) Listed under 'camps and settlements' (Site revealed by aerial photography.) (2) (SK 480295) Soil and crop marks suggestive of a RB settlement, including hut circles and enclosures, centred at SK 48052945, a small four-sided earthwork at SK48282930 and a pit alignment or line of a post holes at SK48392933. A number of pits are associated with these features. (3a) Nothing visible on RAF AP's F21/58/RAF/1151/0339-40 dated 26.6.53. The area was partly under stubble and partly ploughed at the time of field investigation. A few sherds of early RB ware, fragments of Roman tile and extensive scatters of stone were noted. No trace of the markings on the oblique APs could be seen on the ground. The field names have no significance in this context. (3) "SK 483294. Site in field approx 1 1/2 miles south of river Trent and 1 mile along road from A6 to Radcliffe-on-Soar via Warren Farm. Roman building - probably villa. Walls exposed to prepare plan. Considerable scatter of ploughed up tesserae. Numerous fragments of pottery, mostly coarse ware, fragments of painted plaster, three sherds of Samian ware, and mortaria. Coins - Tetricus II and Constantine I. Material suggests date of 3rd to 4th century AD. A few animal bone fragments and oyster shells. Evidence of other buildings in the vicinity." (4) The complete area of crop marks is covered by corn, there are no indications of antiquity. (5) Lockington, SK 482294. Air photographs show a small rectangular building consisting of several rooms, with a wing at one end, set amongst variously shaped straight sided enclosures. (6) SK 480 294 A complex of overlapping enclosures contains about twenty Iron Age hut circles has been photographed. It is certain that not all the enclosures are contemporary and a long period of occupation is probable. Dating evidence is scarce but fieldwalking has produced pottery ranging from early/mid 1st century A.D. to mid 2nd century A.D. In the next field is a Roman villa. (7) SK 480 295. Site revealed by aerial photography, SE of Dunster Farm. Scheduled No 126. SK 483 294. Roman villa and enclosures N of Radcliffe Lane. Scheduled No 140. (8) LE 54 Listed as the site of a Roman villa. In 1983-4 plough damage revealed some surface finds (b). (9)
